Taking Full Advantage of Summer (For Writers)
It’s almost that time of year, or maybe it already is for you, when school is out, activities are ending, and the sun is heating up! It’s Summer! When you finally get to take a break, go on that vacation, and invest in things you normally wouldn’t be able to. So today let’s talk about some way you can invest in your writing.
I’m going to go through a few ideas and leave you with some resources to start your summer off strong!
Finish a writing project or start a new one!
Do you have a short story you’ve been trying to finish? Is a new idea knocking at the door? Explore that idea! Set aside time and finish that project!
2. Learn!
If school and extra activities are over for you then you now have more mental energy to devote to a different type of learning. Borrow or buy some writing books. Join a writing group! Take a summer writing class. Or take a look at your local bookstore or library to see what they’re offering!
3. Gather ideas.
Summer is a great opportunity to gather ideas for future writing projects. Take note of new things that come to you. Let your creativity flow as you go about your day and write down any new or random ideas you get. Everything from character names, to theme, to plot, can help spark a story idea!
4. Polish your writing!
Edit those stacks of stories! Take down one and start to go through it and polish it as much as you can.
5. Read
All writers must also be readers! So find good books to read this summer and dive into them. Check out your local library and see if they’re offering any summer reading challenges for extra motivation
6. Finally, make a bucket-list
Take a sheet of paper or a calendar and write down the first month of summer. Then put all your goals (manageable goals) onto it. Figure out the best times and places and how much you want to spend on each activity. Don’t forget to leave lots of time for family, friends, and fun! Then when you get to the end of the month you can see how much you accomplished. Don’t feel like you have to hold yourself to a high goal standard, start small, make it fun, don’t let your bucket-list become a dread-list.
I can’t wait to learn what you all accomplish!
