Sixteen-year-old Ryland has deserted the Discreeters, evil leaders in the country of Yunetsy, but with his family name associated with them fitting into a new group won't be easy. One thing is clear to him, to be able to stay he must keep his past a secret; because no one would ever trust a Discreeter.
Eleven-year-old Saros has lived with the idea that he helped start the war. When he is sent away from his foster family to live with his sister, who is trying to stop the war, things don't go well. Saros is quickly pushed to the side as she helps lead the Uniters, a group fighting against the Discreeters for peace. Trying to earn his sister's trust, Saros decides he'll do whatever it takes to convince her he’s loyal, even if that means fitting in where he doesn’t belong.
Seventeen-year-old Gatlin was only good at only one thing: going to school. So when the school house on Yunetsy is shut down by the ruling Discreeters, Gatlin knows it’s time to step up. He sets out with his sisters to find a new group to join, but settling in is harder than Gatlin thought. There’s only one way to fix things, proving he belongs at the head of his class and first into the battle. But when attacks ring out Gatlin doesn’t know how long he’ll be able to last on his own.
Six-year-old Rivor has always looked up to his older sister, his only family, to help him to do what's right. When she orders him to stay behind as she goes on a mission for the war his world starts to fall apart. Can he really learn to work with another group, will they know the right thing to do?

While Discreeters struggle to overthrow the peaceful Isles and new Uniter soldiers try to prove they belong, the thought of failing…and falling into the darkness, sends fear into their hearts. The Uniters will have to find a way to pull together their team, strengths and weaknesses, to connect and fight their enemy—or they may all fall beneath the Discreeters' reign.
