Fake Questions with Real Answers

“You’re a writer, so you never run out of ideas, right?”

Creativity and fiction writing go hand-in-hand, but like a car you can’t run at 100MPH all the time, you’ll eventually just run out of gas. Or, for me, ideas.

I’ve heard this analogy used before and I love it! Think of yourself as holding a cup, it’s filled to the brim with all your creative ideas. You start pouring them out, your pour them into your writing, into your baking, into your school and into your work. You keep giving more and more from just that one cup and then when you look down—it’s empty.

You no longer have a full cup.

So what do you do? You re-fill it of course!

For every writer, for every person, this is different. I like to read good books, I like to look around me at new ideas, I like to think of my favorite shows and plays, my favorite times with friends and family, I also take ‘rest days’.

Everybody has their slow days, and days where you can’t seem to think of anything creative to do. I’ve been there myself, I run out of ideas…but a good writer knows how to fill the gas tank back up and keep going!

So yes, I do run out of ideas at times, but I also know how to find more.

Extra Tip* to avoid letting your cup be covered in dust keep a place for all the random ideas you get! A notebook filled with quotes, a Pinterest Board filled with cool photos, a magazine with an article that pricked your interest!
